So you’ve been stripping your ass off but the damn Garrick are turning short. Especially the bigger ones. And no matter what you rip back over the surface, it just does not seem to produce a take. You’ve even put a sinking fly on and still, no love.
This is a scenario that is not uncommon when targeting Garrick. The big especially can get quite picky!
A simple trick I learnt whiles back is to double up your flies. Taking a leaf out of the trout angler’s book, I tie a slim baitfish imitation in a New Zealand rig below my popper. (Attach a piece of leader straight from the bend of the popper to the baitfish).
While casting does get tougher, I’ve found that as long as I’m getting a decent cast in, the percentage of hookups goes up.
