What are you doing here? You should be fishing! Spring time means the rivers have thawed, and our bones, soft tissue and muscles are being warmed up for what is a long awaited summer season. But…. we understand that you have to put your feet up sometime…? In that case, while you’re moseying about, check out some curated fly fishing films to welcome spring 2024!
RED KALOI – MERV’S NOSTALGIA
The exotic fish from Borneo that blew many fly fishing minds around the world a few years ago, and the specialist that targets them – Mervyn Tan – are back at it from the island jungle. As seen in The Mission issue 36’s Wish List Fish, where we described the red kaloi as a “snub-nosed fish wonder that will smash your poppers, tie you up in submerged structure and seriously test your tackle” (which, coincidentally, sounds like what our art director Bod gets up to in his S&M dungeon on a Friday night), this fish should be on your bucket list.
WORLD’S BIGGEST DAM REMOVAL PROJECT CHANGING A CALIFORNIA RIVER – ABC10
An avalanche of change starts with a few individual cases. Much like in the Patagonia-backed Blue Heart of Europe film, the dam removals on the Klamath River in California have a few priority goals in mind – one of which is helping the salmon run, and in this case, outdated contracts for minimal hydropower production are not weighing up against the steam-rolling conservation battle.
PROVIDENCE – YELLOW DOG FLYFISHING
Where it all began. The Seychelles’ atolls were made famous in the fly fishing world by three South African fly fishing guides, Gerhard Loubscher, Keith Rose-Innes and Arno Mathee. This story by Confluence Films shows the journey their outfitter has been on, from the over-fished Indian ocean, to modern day pirates, and eventually, saltwater fly fishing nirvana.
OLYMPIC PENINSULA: RESTORING RAINFOREST RIVERS – TROUT UNLIMITED
By showcasing how well conservation efforts are doing, the more momentum and attention future movements might gain. In this video, join “Trout Unlimited’s Luke Kelly as he travels along iconic rainforest rivers visiting partners and projects to celebrate the incredible restoration and reconnection work underway on the Olympic Peninsula.”
