The Rio de las Vueltas flows crystal clear from Lago Desierto to the confluence of the Rio Toro where it picks up that milky colour from the glacier melt water. It’s a beautiful piece of water that I will come back to fish.

I was told four things about the Rio de las Vueltas:

1) It´s easy to access.

2) It´s full of trout, but

a) these trout are between 10 and 12 inches

b) these trout are very well educated

3) Mostly rainbows with the odd brown. And a very vague…

4) “Good luck on Desierto – its an interesting system. ”

I had also hoped to get to the top of the lake to fish the Rio Diablo and Lago Larga but the day set aside for this mission was bleak – the wind picked up to Patagonia gale standards and the fishing was off for the day. I have a date with the area.

Pity but no worry. I had fun on the Rio de las Vueltas and learnt a few things about it:

1) It is easy to access

2) It is full of trout but,

a) there a lot of fish that are much bigger. My best was a brown of 22 inches (sorry, it was too dark for the photos on the goPro to come clearly)

b) while they are well educated, a bit a out-the-box thinking catches you heaps of fish while the local fishermen (fly and spinner alike) curse you quietly (and not so quietly) under their breaths. I promise that I would  have shared the secret with them had they asked.

3) It is mostly rainbows and some browns.

4) It is an interesting system, that I enjoyed immensely. I found a tiny stream with some stunning fish in it that ate my dry flies with quite an appetite. Caught fish in the Lake and in the streams. Really interesting 🙂
