Into clubs, festivals and gatherings about all things fly fishing? If youโre around South Africa’s South Coast, you should check out the South Coast Fly Anglers. Information and activities are punted through regular newsletters, fly-tying gatherings and fishing trip missions.
WHAT
Omnivorous in their fishing tastes, gregarious and enthusiastic, the South Coast Fly Anglers operate out of southern KZN in the Port Shepstone area. Members range from young Protea comp anglers to mid-80s veterans, and their interests cover everything from fresh to salt, bass, yellows and scalies, to wave garrick and rock salmon.
Monthly fly tying workshops are held at the local tennis club. members compete in a year-long, expertly judgedtying competition and for which prizes are given at the end of each summer. While it might at first appear a bit Web 1.0 (in lieu of a website or an active Facebook page) special mention needs to be made of this clubโs regular, densely populated newsletter put together by stalwart scribe Arthur Cary and which details their many outings and gatherings. If you live in the region and fly fish, you need to subscribe.

KZN freshwater rivers and dams, Ramsgate, Southbroom, and Trafalgar for saltwater. Outings to Umzimkulu and Umzimkulwana rivers, Kokstad, and Matatiele for trout fishing.

A very active club with enthusiastic, dedicated members. Although not a member myself (as I live in too far away, I have been on a few saltwater outings with the club, particularly to Kosi Bay, camping or staying in the cottages. it is on these trips that you see the members coordination and teamwork, led by the duracell octogenarian Arthur Carey.
A great bunch of flyfishers.
