With the release of Laxaรพjรณรฐ | A Salmon Nation, Patagonia have produced another stellar documentary about wild salmon conservation that A) pulls on our heart strings; B) makes us think about mankind’s current destructive trajectory; and C) makes us want to do something about it (at the very least that means turning down the all-you-can-eat sushi platter).
About this film and the issue facing Iceland, Patagonia says, “Open-net salmon farms wreak havoc on the fragile environments theyโre placed in, polluting pristine ecosystems while mistreating the farmed fish and driving local salmon populations to extinction.”
“Laxaรพjรณรฐ | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity.”
While the visuals and characters in this flick specifically highlight the tightrope situation that Iceland’s salmon populations are currently in, it’s not all doom and gloom. With the slightest relief and a nudge in the right direction, nature has shown that it can bounce back.
