WYOMING’S NORTH PLATTE

WYOMING’S NORTH PLATTE

In his photo essay in The Mission Issue 22, photographer Mark Lewis takes us through the seasons, moods and the fishing of his beloved North Platte river.

The North Platte River is a major tributary of the Platte River. It is approximately 716 miles (1 152 km) long, counting its many curves. In a straight line, it travels about 550 miles (890 km), along its course through Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

There are several reservoirs along the North Platte course, thanks to being dammed several times. On the north end of the Park range the Medicine Bow River joins it in the Seminoe Reservoir, formed by Seminoe Dam. Further downstream is the Kortes Reservoir. Still further downstream about 50 miles (80 km) above Casper the North Platte joins the Sweetwater River to form the Pathfinder Reservoir. Northeast of the Pathfinder Reservoir it passes through the Alcova[12] and Gray Reef[13] reservoirs before it hits Casper.
